Stangl Pottery is a favorite of many residents here in Hamilton, as well as many other areas surrounding Trenton, NJ. The interest in this particular pottery is most likely due to its local production history.
In order to get a real feel for the deep home roots of the pottery pieces produced by Stangl, we need to go back in time to Flemington, NJ in 1814. This is when a man named Samuel Hill began operating as Hill Pottery, creating drain pipes, crocks and jars.
In the 1860’s Hill Pottery was purchased by Abram Fulper and by 1900, run by his Grandson, William H. Fulper II. The company was now producing stoneware and art pottery. Martin Stangl was hired by Fulper Pottery in 1910 to create new shapes and glazes and became Vice President of the company in 1924. Within a few years, a second factory was built in Flemington, and at this time Fulper Pottery acquired Anchor Pottery Company in Trenton, NJ.
Fulper Pottery was purchased by Martin Stangl in 1929 and, due to a fire in the larger Flemington factory, he had to divide his production between the smaller Flemington factory and the Trenton factory. In 1935 the smaller factory in Flemington became a showroom and Outlet Store and was no longer producing inventory.
Martin Stangl died in 1972 and the company was sold to Wheaton Glass Company. The end of the road for this beautiful pottery was in 1978 when Stangl was sold to Pfaltzgraff and all production of their pottery ceased.
Stangl Pottery was very popular and over the past few years I have heard some great stories from customers reminiscing of the bird figurines, vases and dinnerware from their childhood.
